He later became an instructor before joining VMF 221. In 1942 VMF 221, flying Wildcats and Buffaloes, participated in the Battle of Midway and suffered heavy losses, Carl survived and brought down an A6M2 Zero. Reassigned to VMF 223, Carl flew as part of the Cactus Air Force on Guadalcanal where he became the US Marine Corps first ace, gaining 16 aerial
